The medical teams are part of the effort by the Nicaragua/Wisconsin Partnership to bring people to Christ in Nicaragua and to help grow physically and spiritually healthy churches. The USA team members work alongside Nicaraguan team members in ministering to people from the churches and the surrounding communities.
Six days of clinics were held at six different church sites in Managua, Tipitapa, and Masaya. An average of 500 people was treated each day with health consults that included medication and health education. Nicaraguan church members assisted at each clinic by helping to organize the clinics, packaging doses of medicine at the clinics, entertaining children with balloons, and preparing a noon meal for clinic workers.
Missionaries Julie Eckhardt and Amy Knox have been working with health education for Nicaraguan women, especially with the Rose of Sharon Wesleyan Church in Los Laureles. They are brainstorming about various ways the medical teams can be involved in administering health care. These include increasing education opportunities at the clinics with seminars and Power Point Presentations; health-education-only clinics; and possibly team members going door to door for 1:1 health education and ministry opportunities.
Nicaraguan District Superintendent Enrique Montenegro reported that four people accepted Christ during the clinic ministries and that some of the people who had left the churches were starting to come back and resume attendance. He states that the teams are a big help with medical care and community recognition for the churches.
$1,000 worth of medicines was purchased by the team for shipment by the Red Cross to victims of Hurricane Felix on the east coast of Nicaragua.
Wisconsin folk can assist teams by collecting eyeglasses, small toys, adult and children's toothbrushes, and by donating funds for Bibles, Bible Story Cards, and medicine.
Dates for 2008 medical teams: February 13-21 & September 10-18
