The medical teams are part of the effort put forth by the Nicaragua/Wisconsin Partnership to encourage community outreach and evangelism in the Nicaraguan churches. Medical aid is brought into area churches to treat patients, provide health education, and to encourage church attenders to extend invitations to the unchurched in their community ultimately resulting in helping individuals develop their relationship with Jesus Christ as well as growing churches physically and spiritually.
Dr. Bob Christie DDS, traveled with the team one day to evaluate the dental needs in the rural area of Malacatoya. This inspired our team to provide dental education to each family instructing them on the proper techniques of oral hygiene throughout the remaining clinics.
The USA team members work alongside Nicaraguan team members in ministering to people from the churches and the surrounding communities.
Six days of clinics were held in Managua and surrounding areas which included:
- Managua (Monte Horeb)
- Masaya (Torre Fuerte)
- Malacatoya (Amigos del Rey II)
- San Ignacio (Mi Buen Pastor )
- Managua (Jesucristo es el camino)
- Ciudad Sandino (Manatial de Vida)
Approximately 1940 people were treated with health consults that included medication and health education. After each family is treated, they receive a copy of the gospel of John and children receive Bible story cards. There is much prayer that takes place before, during, and after the clinics encouraging individuals and extending invitations to accept Jesus Christ into their lives. Nicaraguan District Superintendent Enrique Montenegro reported that several people accepted Christ during the clinic ministries and there were a number of people who were currently not attending church anywhere that had now been invited to church.
Nicaraguan church members assisted at each clinic by helping to organize the clinics, packaging doses of medicine at the clinics, entertaining children with balloons, and preparing a noon meal for clinic workers.
During the week, Todd Keup assisted Missionary Jim Eckhardt in the delivery of the Wesleyan Bible Institute web site, or Instituto Bíblico Wesleyano (IBWWW), a Theological Education by Extension web site for the Latin American community and beyond. He also served with and assisted Mike Knox with some computer hardware support, as well. The IBWWW.ORG website offers theological education online using coursework and curriculum developed by Jim Eckhardt and Mike Knox. While working with Jim Eckhart during the week, two more student applications arrived - one from Mexico and one from Peru. Even more amazing were the interests from outside Latin America! Benin, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Malawi, Niger, United Kingdom, Vanuatu ... Vanuatu? Yes! Vanuatu is a little island off Australia! It's amazing how far this is reaching!
Wisconsin folk can assist teams by collecting eyeglasses, small toys, adult and children's toothbrushes, and by donating funds for Bibles, Bible Story Cards, and medicine.
Dates for upcoming medical teams: September 10-18, 2008 & February 11-19, 2009
