MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DOMAIN NAMES:

This section has been developed for those who need a little more information about domain names. If you are unable to find and answer, please contact us so we can help.

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is a unique name that you select for your web site (www.yourname.com). The name allows anyone world-wide to locate your business or other entity on the Internet.

Do I really need one?

Not necessarily, but for the most-part, yes. If you are only considering putting up a few personal pages or a small Web site, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may already offer space to store a small web site (www.yourISP.com/~yourusername/). However, some ISP's will charge more if they know it is for business use. Most often, businesses get their own domain name.

When should I get a domain name?

As soon as possible! If you have a name selected, register it immediately. It may be available today and gone in an hour. Just because it is unique to you, doesn't mean that someone else hasn't registered it. This happens all of the time.

How do I search for available names?

The fastest way to find an available name is to go to our Domain Name Search. When choosing a name, list different combinations of your name, as over 5 million names have already been registered.

What if my name is taken?

The "whois" search often lists email and phone numbers. You can always offer to purchase the name from the current owner, or if applicable, consider legal action. If all else fails, select a new name and try again.

How do I register a name?

Usually the best way to register a name is by contacting the hosting service you intend to use. (Why? There is a lot of Hosting Service information that needs to be entered at the time of registration - such as DNS numbers, contact information, and so on. It is sometimes easier for the customer to have the hosting service take care of it). You will be billed separately for your domain name.

Can I register a name without having a Web site?

Yes, but this is known as "parking" your domain name. This is your only option since you aren't able to fully register a domain name without having a host server. If you are not starting your web site immediately, we suggest you park your domain name with the hosting service you intend to use.

What will a domain name cost?

Magnifisites can register your domain name for $19.95 per year. Parking your domain name costs $10 per year. You will be billed annually by Magnifisites. Remember, this is only for a domain name, hosting and Web design fees are extra.

I registered my domain name, do I own it?

No. You only have the right to the name for the next one or two years, depending upon how long you have registered it for. After the registration period is up, you will continue to receive a bill for domain name renewal once a year for the name.

Will Magnifisites do this for me?

Yes. We will register your domain name for you.
